Winter Fitness Part 1: What to Do For Exercise in a Winter Wonderland

Winter Fitness Part 1 - SHOES-n-FEET

Oh, winter, why so cold? Don’t you know that low temperatures, rain and snow make some of us want to hide away indoors, glued to a roaring fire? For some of us, staying active in winter is a struggle. Freezing mornings, lots of rain and short days give us enough reasons to put off exercise for later days. But placing your fitness routine on pause until spring isn’t the right idea. Leave the hibernating to the bears! Help! Walking has left me with a painful knot in my ankle.

Arthritis and knee pain - SHOES-n-FEET

I have arthritis in one knee.  Recently I was fitted for some really great sneakers at a local shoestore. They help me walk more, and I do have less knee pain. But now (and I guess it was coming all the time anyway) the tendons in back of my ankles hurt. This pain is in both ankles, but actually more so in the leg without the arthritic knee. I felt the tendon (or whatever it is) the other day after walking more than 10,000 steps, and it had a round knot in it. The ankle of the bad knee leg had a knot, too, but not as big. Any ideas what this knot is, and how to get rid of this pain?

Men Suffer Foot Pain Too

While it’s widely accepted that women are four times more likely to experience foot problems than men (thanks, high heels and pointy pumps!), it doesn’t mean we should ignore the male side of foot discomfort. Foot pain is an equal opportunity nuisance and often results from neglect and a lack of awareness about the right kind of foot care. In honor of Men’s Health Month and Father’s Day, we’re addressing the most common issues plaguing the toes and soles of America’s men and show you how to make life a little easier for the male feet in your life.

Summer Feet Survival

It doesn’t matter whether it hits 90 in April or if it’s still 50s and rainy in July – for Americans all over the country, Memorial Day weekend marks the first official days of summer (whatever the outdoor thermometer may say!). So now that we’ve stored away the jackets in the closet and fired up the grill to launch the barbecue season, it’s time to focus on the coming months of (hopefully) warm weather bliss! But to your feet, summer can mean more than a cool dip in a backyard pool or barefoot stroll over fresh-cut grass.

Making Your Toes Twinkle (Safely)

Ah, spring, summer, sunshine, long walks on the beach! Good weather means finally letting your feet out for a breather after the cold endless winter months. And how better to celebrate your newfound freedom from heavy boots and thick woolen socks than a trip to the nail salon for a little foot pampering? You deserve a little TLC! But before you go, make sure you know the ins and outs of pedicure safety; in the wrong hands, a pedicure can lead to infections and other health complications.

Get Tough on Turf Toe

Ever wonder if the artificial field under your feet during your weekly pick-up football game is causing damage to your feet? Take a look at your big toe. Do you notice any swelling? People who often participate in consistent and vigorous activities on artificial turf fields are at greater risk of having the appropriately named “turf toe”, a condition in which the big toe swells and leads to pain at the toe base, near the ball of the foot.
