Painful Turf Toe

Yesterday in the Bellevue, Wa shoe store we had a man come in complaining of a very painful condition commonly known as turf toe.  We tried to fit him in a rocker soled shoe like the New Balance 927 and the Dansko Professional, but because of swelling issues and the wide width of his foot we simply could not find one to fit him comfortably.  As an alternative, we were able to find a shoe without a rocker sole which fit and then add a graphite plate to that shoe.  The result was the same the toe was imobilized and he was able to get around better.

Just in case you were not aware of the technical definition of Turf Toe is it is acutaneous condition characterized by a painful, erythematous, edematous hallux, and caused by an acute dorsal and plantar tendonitis, often seen in those who play football, rugby and/or soccer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turf_toe). It is also known as a metatarsal-phalangeal joint sprain is an injury to the joint and connective tissue between the foot and one of the toes. When the big toe (1st phalange) is involved (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metatarsalphalangeal_joint_sprain).

Where was the swelling? Would changing the how the shoe was laced have helped--by making the shoe have more depth to it? There are a ton of different ways to lace a shoe to make it fit differently.
