Moisture Wicking Socks - I need them!

Question:  Where can I find and/or order the moisture wicking socks? I really am having problems! Thanks, Jamie

Jamie:

Funny you should ask, all we carry are moisture wicking socks.  Most of our stores carry at least 4 brands of socks:

Thorlo: Thorlo is our padded sock brand.  They will have extra padding in the heel and in the ball of the foot and on some styles they will have padding up the heel and over the instep (area where the laces cover).  These socks are made out of two main fibers one is Thorlon and the other is Coolmax.  Each one of these fibers are meant to wick moisture away and to never become abrasive to the foot helping prevent blisters and calluses.  The socks have hollow fibers that touch the skin and pull the moisture away.  They are also great if you have lost fatty pads at the ball of your foot or have narrow heels!

Wright Sock: Wright Sock is our double layered sock brand.  Both layers are made out of a fiber called Dri-Wright which is their version of Coolmax.  With this sock both layers are thinner and the two layers take up the friction to help with blisters and calluses.  With Dri-Wright it will take the moisture from your skin wick it to layer 1 then to layer 2 getting it off of your skin.

Smartwool: Smarwool is natural merino wool.  Wool is a great material that heat regulates and wicks moisture away.  With these socks most of the wicking happens in a vapor stage.  What that means is sweat does not form as much not allowing it to get to a liquid stage.  With many wool socks or products they are very itchy, with Smartwool the way they extract it from the sheep they have eliminated the itch.  They work extremely well in warm and cool weather.

Aetrex: Aetrex socks have synthetic material which wick moisture, but these socks also have copper fibers woven in.  Copper has been proven to eliminate bacteria and foot odor.

Jamie, the type of shoe you choose can also make a big difference. Shoes made of plastic or vinyl type materials do not allow the foot to breath or for sweat absorbtion. I would recommend you look for leather shoes or mesh shoes which will help you as well.

Jamie,
Thank you ever so much in writing to us about moisture wicking socks. Socks are such an underrated topic that can have a lot to do with how your feet feel throughout the day. I would like to further my co-workers excellent advice with some basic facts about feet and why the fabric/fibers of a sock are vitally important.

As an avid hiker friend of mine says, “Cotton Kills!” To understand this better you must understand that there are three major things that cause blisters. First, friction, second heat & third moisture. You have over 250,000 sweat glands in your feet (and those are just the ones they have mapped). Your feet produce on average a cup of sweat per foot per day. When cotton gets wet it becomes identical to a barbed wire hook. Thus cotton is extremely abrasive. And we haven’t even started moving yet. So, while cotton may breathe and absorb moisture it is not the fabric of our feet. Cotton keeps that moisture and heat right up against the skin. This set up is an ideal situation for blisters to be created. Blisters can lead to all kinds of problems thus, “Cotton kills!” Consequently, you want to look for what we call a “smart fiber.” At SHOES-n-FEET all of our socks have some kind of wicking property to them. Our socks wick moisture and to some extent even heat away from the foot and do not contain any cotton.

Back to the issue at foot—need of moisture wicking socks. If you are looking for moisture wicking socks because your feet, socks and/or shoes are smelly socks are a great way to start. If you still are having problems with odor control after changing your socks we have an amazing product called Sweetfeet. It works!!! A certain Shoe Fitting Specialist whom shall remain nameless had horrible smelling feet and shoes despite good socks. The rest of the staff in the store refused to let him try on shoes in the store. We made him go out back behind the store to try on any new shoes and/or products that came in. Whenever someone would bring a foot powder in to try we would always hand it to this Shoe Fitter. None of these products worked until he tried Sweetfeet. He used it per the instructions and has not had a problem with his foot odor since then—much to the happiness of his co-workers and family members.

Another great product that we have is Foot Glide by Body Glide. I personally get blisters if I am not wearing good socks that have moisture wicking properties. Wearing socks with my sandals is not my idea of fashion forward! To prevent blisters I use Foot Glide because it acts as a one-way barrier and prevents any type of abrasion and/or chaffing. I can easily stick it into my purse or beach bag and have it on hand if I ever start to get a hot spot that might lead to a problem.

So, remember that:
Cotton Kills
Friction + Moisture + Heat = Blisters/Major Problems
250,000 sweat glands per foot
1 cup of sweat per foot per day
Good socks have “Smart Fibers”
Sweetfeet can decrease/eliminate nasty foot odor
Foot Glide prevents blisters and chaffing when you are not wearing a good sock with “Smart Fibers”

You need to choose a 000-025 running shoe based on your foot and arch type not make a choice based on price or style. There are different running shoes for different feet. There are stability shoes and motion control (moderate db2 certification dumps or maximum) shoes, for example. There are also different last shapes, straight or semi-curved. A stability shoe is a shoe that has good support but lets the foot go through its natural gait cycle. The stability shoe is usually made on a semi-curved last and generally fits better on a foot that has a medium or higher arch. A motion control shoe is designed to control pronation or over-pronation and has extra support on th mcse exams e medial side of the shoe. This design helps prevent the foot from rolling over on the arch side. The motion control shoe is usually made on a straight last and will usually fit best on a foot that has a low to medium arch. Our Shoe Fitting Specialists at SHOES-n-FEET can evaluate your foot type and suggest the shoe that will best fit your foot.
