Arch Supports; buying over the counter is harder than just knowing your shoe size?
As shoe fitters, too often we come across ill fitting over the counter arch supports (OTC). It's easy to walk into a store, see a size on a package that looks like your shoe size, buy the product, then throw it in the shoe and away you go. You may even find some temporary relief, because something is better than nothing, but alas your pain returns or it just doesn't quite go away. So, off you go on another quest and you repeat the process. Besides the fact that upwards of 85% of people are wearing the wrong size shoe to begin with here's the issue; your arch length and shoe size rarely are the same. In fact, it's not uncommon to go 1, 2, sometimes even 3 sizes larger in an OTC than the measurement of your shoe size. This is why, as shoe fitters, it's vital to make sure we fit the OTC just like we fit our shoes by starting with a proper measurement and then assessing the fit of the OTC to each foot. Have played the ill-fitting, pain never goes away, OTC game? If so, what are your thoughts?

If I buy an arch support which is bigger than my shoe how does this affect the fit of my shoe?

All over the counter arch supports are trim to fit. That means that you might have to cut off the end of the insole to fit into your shoe, and at SHOES-n-FEET we do that for you. One thing that we look at is also the depth of the shoe and thickness of the insole. That can sometimes change the width of the shoe. Also remember there are over the counter insoles that work better in athletic shoes and some that work better in dress/casual shoes.
Best of Luck.

A couple of days ago I had a perfect example of the fact that many times the size of an OTC and the size of the shoe that a person will wear are not the same. A customer I waited on measured 12 1/2-13 on his arch length and I ended up fitting a size 14 Lynco arch support on him. The Ariat shoe I fit him in ended up being a size 11 1/2. I did have to trim the front of the Lynco to fit. So this illustrates why you need to be fitted for both the arch supports and the shoes and not just assume that they will be the same size. That's why we at SHOES-n-FEET take the time to fit both to your feet.
